Greg Narain of Beercasting.com gave a presentation last night at the Bloggers Meeting that was held at Harvard Law's Berkman Institute. You can download the podcast of the complete meeting by clicking here. Greg's presentation begins at time stamp 36:30 and goes till about 53:00.
I have to admit that I couldn't figure out exactly what Greg was trying to accomplish with BeerCasting when I first checked out his site about a week ago. But after his presentation, I think I get it and it could be "brilliant" as they say in the Guinness ad.
Here are some of the details:
- He wanted to do some podcasting but figured one guy talking into a mic was boring. He knew that some of the best conversations you have are over a beer. Therefore, grab some interesting people > go to a bar > have a conversation > record same. Thus BeerCasting was born.
- Well actually it's quite a bit more complicated than that because Greg does a lot of post production work to split these conversations up into manageable chunks by topic.
- Business Model - sell ads to beer companies (duh), to technology companies that provide some of the connectivity and maybe ultimately to consumer product companies....e.g. Colgate sponsoring a discussion on co-workers with bad breath.
- Marketing - pretty much viral. Turns out the people who participate in the beercast do most of the initial downloading of the segments they participated in. They tell their friends about it... you get the picture. Greg has only been at this for a couple of months and he already has about 7,000 downloads.
- How can Greg afford to fly all around the country and do this? Funny you should ask. Greg has a conference management software/service company. He's flying around the country to conferences all the time.
